Visitors of Gili Trawangan usually come from Bali. They were the travelers who seek for quieter place but with atmosphere almost similar to Bali and thus the regular route of speed boats from Bali to Gili Trawangan were established. Nowadays, many visitors take speed boats directly from Bangsal harbor. The journey with speed boats will take only one hour or even less than that. Don’t worry though, the island offers a traditional horse cart called cidomo. This horse cart can be hired to transport a maximum of 4 people around Gili Trawangan. The price to ride cidomo will be approximately Rp. 150.000 per round (this is a fixed price and no bargain allowed).

If riding the horse cart is not the choice, visitors can simply rent a bike for Rp. 20.000 per hour. There are plenty of bike rentals in Gili Trawangan that will gladly lend a good bike for visitors. Gili Trawangan is one small island which makes walking around is not a bad idea.

Gili Trawangan in the Past and the Present

The thriving tourism of Gili Trawangan might have never come to reality as of now if it wasn’t because of a group of backpackers. Back then in the year 1990, there was a group of backpackers came to the island as a part of their adventure. Charmed by the beauty and atmosphere of the island as well as the friendly locals, the backpackers spread good words about the island. There were no sufficient facilities back then and the tourism development could be considered as slow.

The development boom didn’t happen until the year 2005. Gili Trawangan prepared itself further to accommodate visitors and become a better tourism destination. The result of the development boom can be seen now as more accommodations spread further in the east side of the island. Some villas however are found hidden in the middle of the island or even the west side to avoid crowds of east side. Yes, the east side of Gili Trawangan is full of buildings to accommodate visitors but the west side remains untouched for the most part.

Just like Bali, the accommodations found in Gili Trawangan are widely spread from the budget range, mid-range and high range. It is not just about the hospitality but the other facilities as well such as bars, restaurants and other facilities for tourism entertainment purposes. Bike rentals, diving and snorkeling equipment rentals, cidomo service and a lot others are built following the rapid growth of Gili Trawangan tourism.

The newer facilities in Gili Trawangan are made to accommodate not only adults but also children. Therefore, families won’t find difficulties in bringing their children as well. Some of the hotels or villas even provide the service of babysitting so that parents will also be able to enjoy some time without worrying about the children too much.

Fun Activities But Not Limited to Snorkeling and Diving

Snorkeling and diving are two popular activities attracting travelers to come to Gili Trawangan. The clear water makes it easy to see corals and the sea creatures swimming and swarming around them. There are about 25 diving sites surrounding Gili Islands. From Gili Trawangan, it is also possible to reach other diving points those are closer to Gili Meno or Gili Air.

That being said, Gili Trawangan is not all about diving and snorkeling. Visitors of Gili Trawangan can enjoy their time playing golf, riding on horsebacks, kayaking, sunbathing and other activities including party. Gili Trawangan is often called as the party island. Why? That’s because every visitor of the island doesn’t seem to want to leave a day without partying by the beachside. When the night comes, expect the beachside to be more crowded. Some of them will be sitting around the bar while some others spend their time barbecuing while enjoying liquors.

For partygoers, party boats will be available from time to time. The party boats are privately chartered and one party can last for six hours or even half day. Starting hour is decided by the chartering group. There are also overnight trips those might include camping, diving, surfing, fishing, visiting nearby islands and more. The trips might be done in two days or even more than six days. In these trips, it’s possible to go around the Gili Islands. It’s not only Gili Trawangan but also Gili Meno and Gili Air.

Determining the Best Time to Visit Gili Trawangan

When is the best time to visit the island? Actually, all time of the year is fine and good enough to visit Gili Trawangan. Travelers might want to add seasons (weather) into considerations. Eventually, traveling seasons will also be important especially for budget travelers. The best time to visit Gili Trawangan according to weather is somewhere between August to September where the sea is calm and various water activities are safer and can be done with ease. Meanwhile, the waters of Gili Trawangan tend to have high tides from February to March.
